Silicone, Gold Vermeil and Solid Gold Earring Backs: What Is Included?

Silver-blue Akoya pearl studs showing straight gold-colored posts and butterfly backs

The back of a pearl earring deserves the same attention as its front. A product may have solid gold posts and a different material for the removable backs. That is useful information when comparing prices, choosing a gift or replacing a missing component. The question to ask is specific: which backs are supplied with this exact pair and selected option?

First separate the material from the fastening

Silicone, gold vermeil and solid gold describe materials. Butterfly, friction and threaded describe forms or fastening systems. These terms answer different questions. A gold-colored butterfly back does not reveal whether it is solid gold or plated, and a photograph cannot establish its composition. Read the written specification for both the post and the removable back.

What the material descriptions mean

Silicone earring backs

Silicone backs are available in different shapes and constructions. Ask whether the backing contains other components, which parts contact the ear and which post it is designed to fit. The material name alone does not confirm compatibility.

Silicone is discussed here as a general backing category. It is not an included extra in the SEVENERA product examples below. Do not assume that a spare silicone pair will arrive unless your order details explicitly confirm it.

Gold vermeil earring backs

Gold vermeil has a sterling silver base with a gold coating. The FTC's Jewelry Guides distinguish coated products from jewelry made throughout of a gold alloy. When a listing describes 18K gold vermeil over sterling silver, the 18K description applies to the gold coating; it does not make the entire backing solid 18K gold.

Look for both parts of the description: the coating and the underlying metal. If coating thickness or another manufacturing detail matters to you, request that information rather than estimating it from color or price.

Solid gold and sterling silver backs

An 18K gold alloy contains 18 parts gold in 24, or 75% gold. Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver. These are material specifications, not interchangeable color names. A solid 18K backing and a vermeil backing can look similar in a product photograph, while their construction differs. Neither material name establishes how well an unspecified replacement will fit your existing post.

What current SEVENERA stud listings include

The following examples were checked against the published product details. Their specifications apply to those designs and options, rather than every earring in the collection.

  • Silver Blue Akoya studs: the silver-post option includes two 925 sterling silver butterfly backs. The solid 18K yellow gold post option includes two 18K gold vermeil butterfly backs over sterling silver.
  • Silky White Akoya studs: solid 18K yellow gold posts are supplied with two 18K gold vermeil butterfly backs over sterling silver.

Check fit before choosing a replacement

Begin with the earring you own, not a generic description such as standard back. Share its product name and a clear view of the post. Ask whether a replacement is compatible, which material it uses and whether the quoted quantity is one back or a pair.

Check whether your earring uses a friction or threaded fastening and request a compatible replacement. A change of metal does not automatically change the fastening system. Do not force a component that feels unsuitable, and ask for guidance if a back has become loose or distorted.

Keep the pearl in mind when caring for the fittings

A pearl stud is a combination of materials. Follow care advice for the complete earring rather than applying a metal-cleaning method to every part. GIA recommends a soft, clean cloth after wear and advises against ultrasonic or steam cleaning for pearls.

Before ordering, check the selected option, post material, backing material and included quantity together. For a new pair or a replacement request, contact SEVENERA with the product link and the detail you would like confirmed.
