Akoya Pearls: A Quality & Pairing Guide

For Akoya earrings, begin with the two pearls together. Decide whether you want a delicate accent or a more noticeable pair, then compare the actual options before choosing a setting. A beautiful individual pearl is only one part of a balanced pair.

What makes Akoya different?

Akoya are saltwater cultured pearls, often round and white to cream, sometimes with a pink overtone. GIA describes them as commonly smaller than 9 mm, while noting that pearls can fall outside typical ranges. See GIA’s overview of cultured pearl types. A type name is not an individual quality grade or a promise of origin.

Compare luster under the same light

Ask to see your shortlisted pearls in one photograph and in a slow, unfiltered video. Keep the light, background and camera distance consistent. Look beyond the brightest white highlight: do you still enjoy the pearl when it turns? If one looks attractive only at a particular angle, request another view before deciding. Treat different sellers’ studio photographs as introductions rather than a reliable side-by-side comparison.

Understand the surface you will wear

Request front, side and rear views of each pearl. Ask the seller to point out visible marks instead of leaving you to guess whether a spot is a reflection. For a proposed stud setting, ask which side will face outward and where the drill hole or attachment will sit. Decide what you are comfortable seeing both close up and at normal wearing distance.

Choose size with the finished design in mind

Compare actual millimeter measurements, not the space the pearl occupies on screen. Ask for an on-ear reference at the intended size. For a drop design, check its total length as well as pearl diameter. If you own earrings you like, share their measurements as a practical reference for the new pair.

Choose your pair before its setting

Place both pearls side by side in the same frame. Do they look balanced in outline, color, apparent size and brightness? Ask to see them rotated together, then compare them with your preferred metal color. For a loose pair, confirm whether the pearls are undrilled, half-drilled or fully drilled before approving any mounting work.

Choose your pair, then discuss your preferred setting. Confirm the exact pearls, dimensions, metal, ear posts, backs and any documented treatments before ordering. A guide photograph illustrates the selection idea; it does not reserve a specific pair.
